Taking action!

‘If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done’ – Bruce Lee

About 10 years ago I decided to take a food allergy test. One of those ones where you prick your finger and post the blood sample off and get back detailed information about the foods you are reacting to. I’d been thinking about doing something for years before that because I had a lot of tummy problems and I was convinced that it was food related but didn’t know what.

I’d kept putting off doing it because it seemed a lot of money at the time to pay out for something which might turn out to be a waste.

As soon as the results came back and I changed my diet, there was an immediate improvement. I can’t say everything was perfect but it was so much better. Turned out I was having a reaction to milk proteins.

If only I’d done it years before I could have avoided all those problems. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Over the years people have made comments such as ‘I could never do that, it’s just too much hassle’ or ‘Imagine never having a cheese sandwich again’ or even ‘Come on, one milkshake/cappuccino/cream cake won’t hurt’. Really not helpful! The truth is, if you were suffering badly and you knew that by avoiding certain foods you would feel better, wouldn’t you try it?

To be fair, over the years, the range of food available to people who avoid dairy has improved dramatically, helped significantly by the increasing number of restaurants and food stores catering for the vegan market. Coconut milk ice cream, for example, is amazing! You can even get dairy free condensed milk! I’ve always liked dark chocolate which, if you get the good quality stuff, doesn’t contain any dairy. The only thing I do struggle with is cheese but I’ve got used to not having it now and no longer miss it.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, this week I went to see someone who specialises in holistic health. You might remember in a previous post https://wordpress.com/post/happyhealthymeajourney.com/46 I talked about how bad my balance is? I know that it isn’t something in my head like dizziness or an eye or ear problem, it’s something in my lower body/feet and I really wanted to see if it is something that can be resolved.

I know it’s going to cost me a small fortune but I genuinely believe it is going to help me with my balance problems and, if it does, then, just like with the food testing, it is worth the cost. Can you put a price on your health and well-being? Well, as long as it doesn’t put you in debt, then no I don’t think you can. I want to be able to dance, to turn in my partners arms without staggering, even to walk down the road without worrying I’ll trip over.

So this time I haven’t made the mistake of thinking about it for years even though I’ve had the problem for a very long time. As soon as I decided I wanted to do something about it, I didn’t procrastinate. I made a decision, researched who to see, and made an appointment and, do you know what? It felt good! I felt proud of myself for doing it.

The first session was an assessment and it soon became clear what the problem is and I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks/months as we work towards better spine alignment, more flexible joints and, hopefully, improved balance.

I guess this week there isn’t a tiny tweak as such but if there is something you have been putting off, whether it’s health related or not, then maybe this is the week to do it? Don’t live with ‘what if’, give it a go and see what happens. After all, if you try something and it works then how amazing is that? If it doesn’t, well at least you tried! Always remember that there’s at least a 50% chance whatever it is will work out!

We all put things off, it’s human nature. We allow our brains to tell us that we shouldn’t do something because we don’t have the time, it’s too expensive, people might think we are silly, it’s probably going to fail, etc. Well guess what? If you think it’s going to fail, then chances are it will. A positive, can do attitude brings positive results. I’d love to know if you decide to give something that you’ve been putting off a go this week – let me know in the comments and good luck!

Until next time xx
